L’Enveloppe with Chinda
Sally Melville’s creatively designed and asymmetric L’Enveloppe draws admiring glances and compliments (even from non-knitters!) wherever it goes. A cross between a shrug, a wrap, and a sweater, it’s an addictive little knit that’s easy and fun to wear.
In this class you will learn how to:
– Work a crochet cast-on
– Work a simple version of short rows
– Sew a decorative seam
– Pick up stitches to work a short-row “sleeve”
What You Need to Know: (prerequisites) –
– How to work in seed stitch (or garter, if you prefer)
– How to bind off
NOTE: There is Homework before Class!
(Do not wait until the last minute!)
1) Well before the first class session, purchase and download a copy of Sally Melville’s L’Enveloppe pattern.
Ravelry Link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lenveloppe
Bring to class either an electronic or a paper copy of the pattern.
2) Knitting Homework: Make a gauge swatch in seed or garter stitch with Fluff or Fingering Yarn held double, then wash, block it flat, and hang it for a couple days. Then measure gauge. Gauge should be 13, 14, 15, or 16 stitches over 4 inches in your preferred stitch pattern (seed or garter). If it isn’t, change needle sizes and try again. If you do not have time to follow these instructions for a gauge swatch, just be aware that your finished garment may not be exactly the size you had hoped it would be…but it should fit somebody.
In between class sessions, there will be a lot of knitting to do at home. Please make sure that you’ll have time to do it.
Note: This class is not for the very beginning knitter. Advanced beginners should be OK.

You are invited to join us for a Knit-A-Long with Monika!
Amiga by Mags Kandis
a simple, casual cardigan, knit top down…
To quote Mags, the Amiga is intended to be “a little something to protect us from chills.” The pattern is written for sport weight yarn on size US8 needles and comes in sizes from XS through 3X. We’ve knit it with Alpaca Twist for a wonderfully soft garment with a nice drape.
It is knit flat, with a front border band that is picked up and knit in stockinette stitch after the body of the sweater is finished. The sleeves are picked up from live stitches and knit in the round. The pattern is shown as a cardigan, but if you don’t knit the sleeves, it makes a great vest with drop shoulders.
Come join your fellow knitters for fun and encouragement as we all work along on the same project! Monika Riggs, a member of the twist team, will be knitting along and be there to offer moral support. We’ll also show a couple of alternate stitch patterns that could be used for the front band.
Please Note: This is a knit-a-long, not a class, so there will be no formal instruction.
You should be able to do the following without supervision: Cast on, bind off, knit, purl, calculate a gauge swatch, make increases using KFB (knit in front and back), pick up stitches, and have some experience knitting in the round. If you want to knit this sweater but don’t know some of the prerequisite techniques, you can call the shop to schedule a Private Lesson before the Knit-a-long begins.
Our first meeting will be on May 4, from 1 pm to 3 pm. You can check out the pattern, try on the sample, choose the size you want to make, select and wind your yarn, and, if time permits, knit the gauge swatch and cast on – or you can do that in advance and just come and knit. After that, we’ll be meeting to knit on our cardigans from 1 pm to 3 pm on the following Sundays…
3rd AmigaKAL will be: May 4, 18, 25 and a last gathering on June 1
